The 2010 Abed Kathem Tournament in Sterling Heights on July 10 featured four teams: the Detroit Wing Ball and the Iraqi American Forum Team from Michigan, the Alrafidayn soccer team from Washington, D.C and the Windsor Stars from Canada.
After six matches between the teams, the final game came down to Wing Ball vs. Alrafidayn. Wing Ball took the championship with a final score of 3-0. A “Memory Game” was played in honor of Abed Kathem, father of player Firas-Abed Kathem.
The Abed Kathem Club was founded in 2006 to recognize the importance of holding onto the roots of the homeland of Iraq. Its main mission is uniting the first generation of sons to keep Diaspora alive. Soccer has always been the one sport that unifies the Iraqi people, organizers said.
