The intersection of art and faith

When Maysoun Yatooma Seman reflects back on her childhood, it’s evident that her passion for art was always there. “I can remember being around age seven when my family would comment on and marvel at my artistic abilities. Drawing came easily to me, as did being a creative person. But I did not give my artistic talents much value and high school was the last time I gave it any attention at all.”

An Iraqi update from Fr. Pierre Konja

What may come as a surprise to most people who talk to Fr. Pierre Konja about Iraq is the normalcy of it all. “I grab a bite to eat with friends in town and the locally owned Christian restaurants will even serve beer. I drove to the store today and picked up few things, the kids play Fortnite and love Snapchat” said Fr Pierre, speaking on a Sunday evening Iraqi time.

Destined to be born

I write this story in first person instead of a feature story because I was indirectly involved. I was driving my daughter home from ice skating one early evening when I answered a call from an unknown number which is not typical of me. I usually let those calls go to voicemail. Something compelled me to answer and when I did a woman on the other end of the line asked if I was Vanessa Denha Garmo from the Chaldean News. Speaking to her on Bluetooth in my car, I answered that I in fact was she. She proceeded to say, “so, you are anti-abortion?”

History's deadliest pattern

The dreadful attacks against Christians in the Middle East by the Islamic State group (ISIL) follows an unfortunate, familiar pattern of genocidal religious persecution. Susan Adelman’s book, After Saturday Comes Sunday, pulls back the curtain on religious violence in the Middle East, focusing on massacres suffered by early Christian churches, the genocide of Armenians, Syrians and Greeks in 1915, and the present-day destruction carried out by ISIL.
