Driving the Way

The CCF’s H.E.A.L. (Hard of Hearing, E.S.L., American Sign Language, Life Skills) Project is using a state-of-the-art driving simulator to help deaf students to learn how to drive. The H.E.A.L. Project helps better equip those with hearing impairments to live independent lives. Assisted by an American Sign Language interpreter for the deaf, the group will learn how to become licensed drivers.

Preserving History through Art

Nearly 700 attendees had the opportunity to experience the land between two rivers through paintings, woodwork and sculptures at the 2nd Annual Beth Nahrain Art Show held at the Chaldean Community Foundation November 3-5.

Featured artists included Reni Stephan, Sabah Wazi, Azhr Matti, Wilson Sarkis, Mark Georgies, Cassidy Azzow, Fr. Patrick Setto, Emad Tammo, Habib Hannona and Savannah Meyer. Proceeds from the event benefited the victims of the Bakhdida wedding fire through a fundraising effort supported by Nineveh Rising.

Planning for College Costs

Prospective college students and their families attended the Oakland University Admissions and Financial Aid Night on November 15. Guests were able to meet with Oakland University staff and ask questions about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the associated costs of higher education, and the overall admissions process.

National Civics Bee

The Chaldean Community Foundation and Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce are partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Michigan Chamber of Commerce to host a first-of-its-kind civics competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Participating 6th, 7th and 8th graders will flex their civics knowledge for a chance to win recognition and cash prizes. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. to compete in the inaugural National Civics Bee national championship in Fall 2024.

Delegation Visits NYC

A small delegation of community members met in New York with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shi’a Alsudani, to discuss the current acrimony going on between the central government and the Chaldean Patriarch. The group also addressed the plight of Christians in Iraq with a special focus on a self-managed administrative unit in the Nineveh Plain and the recent alcohol ban inside Iraq which disproportionately hurts Christian and Yezidi businesspeople.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Chaldean Community Foundation was proud to partner with the Anthony L. Soave Family Mobile Mammography and Health Screening Center which is designed to ensure all women have easy access to high-quality breast health services regardless of their ability to pay. The Ascension St. John Hospital “Because We Care” program is committed to caring for all people with special attention to those who are uninsured, under-insured and require financial support with breast care.

5th Annual CCF Gala

The Chaldean Community Foundation hosted its 5th Annual Awards Gala on Friday, September 22. More than 700 people attended, including dignitaries from across the state of Michigan and special guests from Iraq. During the program, the CCF honored Karam Bahnam with the Servant Leadership Award. Karam, one of the founding members of the Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center (ECRC) and REVIV3, is a successful entrepreneur who has dedicated much of his time to helping others deepen their faith.

Celebrating New Americans

The newly designated American citizens received certificates of the Citizenship class completion and had the opportunity to meet with and speak to Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. Then they began the process of becoming registered voters with help from the Sterling Heights City Clerk’s office. Attendees also had the ability to fill out sample ballots and use a tabulator to get familiar with how voting works during election cycles.

What it Means to be Chaldean

CCF President Martin Manna was interviewed on Sunday Edition with Alisa Zee to discuss the Chaldean community and the triumphs and trials the community has faced.

In the 20-minute, 2-part interview, Martin Manna also discusses the origins of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce and the Chaldean Community Foundation, what it means to be Chaldean, and the current state of the Chaldean community in Iraq and other areas.

Honoring Chaldean Scholars

The CCF experienced a record-breaking year, awarding 33 scholarship recipients with a total of $103,500 in scholarships at our Scholarship Award Reception on August 24.

The CCF has a large donor based of donor families and businesses including: w3r Consulting, Yvonne Nona Memorial Scholarship Fund, Drs. Nathima and Peter Atchoo Family Foundation Scholarship Fund, the Abdul Karim and Jameela Sesi Memorial Scholarship Fund, Derek Dickow and the Children’s Health Fund at the Children’s Foundation, DA Advisory Group, and Alline Salon Group.

Record Crowd for Back-to-School Events

Nearly 400 attendees came to the Warren Consolidated Schools (WCS) Back-to-School event on August 10. The event provided free resources and the ability to ask questions of various staff members. WCS distributed 325 backpacks, and Stellantis’ Middle Eastern Employees Together (MEET) group also donated 100 bags of school supplies for the event.

Ball ’N Out

This year, the CCF is pleased to offer two separate programs two afternoons each week for both boys and girls. Through generous support from the Good Sports Foundation, girls in our community are learning basic volleyball skills. The Good Sports Foundation donated over twenty-six pairs of shoes and outfits, volleyballs, and nets. Each participant in the program received a new pair of gym shoes and a complete volleyball outfit, to help the girls feel more like a team. The goal is to make a very real impact on the empowerment, self-esteem, and self-respect of teen girls through mindful movement and creative expression.

Safie Specialty Foods Job Fair

Looking for a job, or looking for employees? We can help! The Chaldean Community Foundation hosted a job fair for Safie Specialty Foods on Wednesday, July 5. Guests were encouraged to try Safie’s delicious food items ranging from pickles and asparagus to carrots and their famous beets, all while learning about the company’s culture. With the CCF’s help, twenty-eight job seekers filled out applications and some even interviewed with Safie Foods’ HR management. Three people from that event have already been hired.
