National Civics Bee

The Chaldean Community Foundation and Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce are partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Michigan Chamber of Commerce to host a first-of-its-kind civics competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Participating 6th, 7th and 8th graders will flex their civics knowledge for a chance to win recognition and cash prizes. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. to compete in the inaugural National Civics Bee national championship in Fall 2024.

5th Annual CCF Gala

The Chaldean Community Foundation hosted its 5th Annual Awards Gala on Friday, September 22. More than 700 people attended, including dignitaries from across the state of Michigan and special guests from Iraq. During the program, the CCF honored Karam Bahnam with the Servant Leadership Award. Karam, one of the founding members of the Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center (ECRC) and REVIV3, is a successful entrepreneur who has dedicated much of his time to helping others deepen their faith.

Celebrating New Americans

The newly designated American citizens received certificates of the Citizenship class completion and had the opportunity to meet with and speak to Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. Then they began the process of becoming registered voters with help from the Sterling Heights City Clerk’s office. Attendees also had the ability to fill out sample ballots and use a tabulator to get familiar with how voting works during election cycles.

What it Means to be Chaldean

CCF President Martin Manna was interviewed on Sunday Edition with Alisa Zee to discuss the Chaldean community and the triumphs and trials the community has faced.

In the 20-minute, 2-part interview, Martin Manna also discusses the origins of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce and the Chaldean Community Foundation, what it means to be Chaldean, and the current state of the Chaldean community in Iraq and other areas.

Ball ’N Out

This year, the CCF is pleased to offer two separate programs two afternoons each week for both boys and girls. Through generous support from the Good Sports Foundation, girls in our community are learning basic volleyball skills. The Good Sports Foundation donated over twenty-six pairs of shoes and outfits, volleyballs, and nets. Each participant in the program received a new pair of gym shoes and a complete volleyball outfit, to help the girls feel more like a team. The goal is to make a very real impact on the empowerment, self-esteem, and self-respect of teen girls through mindful movement and creative expression.

Safie Specialty Foods Job Fair

Looking for a job, or looking for employees? We can help! The Chaldean Community Foundation hosted a job fair for Safie Specialty Foods on Wednesday, July 5. Guests were encouraged to try Safie’s delicious food items ranging from pickles and asparagus to carrots and their famous beets, all while learning about the company’s culture. With the CCF’s help, twenty-eight job seekers filled out applications and some even interviewed with Safie Foods’ HR management. Three people from that event have already been hired.

Stepping Up to Dance

As a new educational offering, the Chaldean Community Foundation held traditional dance classes on June 7 and 14. Those in attendance were able to learn four different styles of dance from instructors Vinos Kassab and Raquel Orow. The diverse group included everyone from young Chaldeans trying to learn and maintain their own culture to a couple seeking to become competent at traditional dances before their wedding celebration later this year.

CCF Receives Comcast Foundation Grant

The Chaldean Community Foundation was awarded a $10,000 grant through the Comcast Foundation. This funding will support individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and their caregivers with the digital tools and resources to feel comfortable with technology and learn basic digital literacy skills. The Chaldean Community Foundation (CCF) is a place where employees speak various languages, staff have lived similar immigration experiences, and clients can build a foundation based on education, mutual reliance, and employment.

Creating Healthier Communities

On May 6, the Chaldean Community Foundation hosted a Community Health Fair in partnership with the Chaldean American Association for Health Professionals.

Those in attendance experienced live demonstrations, interactive displays, and had the opportunity to receive free health screenings for blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol.

Bishop Basilio Yaldo Visits CCF

His Excellency Bishop Basilio Yaldo visited the Chaldean Community Foundation on May 18. He observed the CCF’s diverse programming, including the Breaking Barriers program, and had the opportunity to visit various employees within the organization. Bishop Yaldo also took part in the CCF’s Little Scholars program where he took a photo with and interacted with children within the program.

Adventures in Entrepreneurship

The Chaldean Community Foundation hosted the Breakfast of Nations event on May 19. The event featured a panel of immigrant entrepreneurs who talked about the challenges of being an immigrant in the United States.

Panelists Wassem Ayar, Nicole Chen, and Amer Batal shared their unique migration stories, personal childhood anecdotes, and early experiences with entrepreneurship.

Creating a Vision

The Learn with a Leader program, a partnership with the Chaldean Community Foundation and Wireless Vision, continued last month with a session focused on Creating Vision and Purpose as a Leader. It also included a presentation from CCF President Martin Manna about his personal journey. Future sessions for the program will detail important leadership skills and topics about Leading Culture, People Intelligence, and much more. The CCF is proud to partner with Wireless Vision to support our next generation of leaders.

Summer Volleyball Program

The Chaldean Community Foundation is offering a volleyball program for Grissom Middle School girls this summer. On April 19, the students had the opportunity to try on equipment that they will use during the summer camp. The equipment was generously donated by the Good Sports Foundation, an organization driving equitable access in youth sports and physical activity, by supporting children in high-need communities to achieve their greatest potential, on the field and in life.
