Detroit-style pizza is getting some national attention. Joe Sheena, the co-founder and co-owner of PizzaPapalis, appeared recently on the CBS daytime show “The Talk” in a pizza competition.

He competed against Andy Brown and his New York-style pizza from Andy’s Pizza in Washington, D.C.

“They just called me out the blue,” Sheena said. “They wanted a Detroit operator.”

While PizzaPaplis is known for its deep-dish Chicago-style pizza, Joe shared the restaurant’s Detroit-style pizza. Several years ago, Sheena created and added Detroit-style pizzas to the PizzaPapalis menu.

On the show, he made PizzaPapalis’ The 313 Detroit-style pizza, featuring pepperoni, bacon and yellow pepper rings. The 313 is their most popular pizza, Sheena said. He also made a vegan pizza as well.

“I am so excited about it,” Sheena said. I am excited because it shows off a little bit of my talents. And not only that. I do want to represent Detroit. “

Sheena and his brother Mark started PizzaPapalis more than three decades ago. There are several metro Detroit locations and one in Toledo, Ohio. Its flagship location in Greektown permanently closed this year.
