Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi Affirms Christians’ Vital Role in Iraq

Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Iraqi Prime Minister Mr. Ali Falih Al-Zaidi visited Mar Yousif Church in the Al-Mansour district of Baghdad, where he extended his congratulations to His Beatitude Patriarch Younan III Nona on assuming the Patriarchal See of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and throughout the world.

During the visit, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi emphasized the importance of preserving Iraq’s national cohesion and strengthening unity among all components of Iraqi society. He affirmed that Christians remain an authentic and integral part of the Iraqi people, recognizing their historic presence and longstanding contributions to the country’s cultural, social, and national identity.

The meeting reflected a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation between religious and state leadership during a significant period of transition for both the Church and the Iraqi government. Prime Minister Al-Zaidi also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting stability, coexistence, and equal citizenship for all Iraqis.

In turn, Patriarch Younan III Nona congratulated the Prime Minister on the formation of the new government and wished him success in fulfilling his national responsibilities. He expressed hope that the new administration would continue efforts to promote security, reform, and opportunities that encourage all Iraqis—including Christians and other minority communities—to remain rooted in their homeland and participate fully in the country’s future.

The visit underscored the enduring relationship between Iraq’s Christian leadership and the nation’s political institutions, while sending a broader message of unity, dialogue, and shared responsibility for Iraq’s future.
