Looking Forward

As we say goodbye to 2020 (and that cannot happen soon enough), we take a look back - but only to see how far we’ve come.

Amazing things happened this year, from Judge Hala Jarbou’s appointment to the federal bench to the grand opening of the brand new Chaldean Community Foundation. Good, even great things are happening in our community, although they are tempered by the loss and devastation that COVID brought. 2020 was a year of turmoil and crisis, but it is time to shake the dust off our shoes and move confidently into the future.

And that future is looking pretty bright. The Chaldean American Chamber is working with the National Faith Director of President-Elect Joe Biden’s transition team to make sure the strides made this year in advocacy and outreach are not lost. They are also looking for a real and meaningful way to help our Christian families in Iraq.

Entrepreneurs that we are, Chaldeans have found a way to adapt and offer drop off and drive by services, create new online businesses, and seize opportunities wherever they may lie. Businesses grow and transform, and we are ready to be on the forefront of new and innovative ideas. Henry Dabish and Powerhouse Gym are excellent examples of a strong Chaldean business model.

As we look toward the future, we are always grateful for the spiritual leadership of the Church. The world is changing and evolving so fast, presenting a multitude of moral dilemmas. Our diocese and in particular, Bishop Francis, keeps abreast of current events and addresses issues as they arise. We continue to be guided by his words and our faith.

The appointment of Judge Yasmine Poles as a successor for Judge Hala Jarbou was a major victory for our community. Recognition on the state level is the first step on her hopefully long career ladder. We wish her the very best and are confident of her success. It is extremely gratifying to see the people that have worked so hard be rewarded in an appropriate manner.

We are looking forward to 2021 - a brand new year, full of possibility and opportunity - and together we celebrate our rich and storied history. I have really enjoyed reading Dr. Miri’s historical pieces, especially the newest series, History of Southfield Manor, and hope you do, too. It evokes for me memories of a childhood spent at the feet of some of the legends in our culture. Even as a child, I knew I was in the presence of something special.

What we take with us into the unknown, including our steadfast belief in God and ourselves, our giving hearts, our servant souls, our love for family and hopes for the future - these are the things that will sustain us and allow us to prosper in 2021 and beyond. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.

With Gratitude,

Paul Jonna
