Chaldean Language Presentation at Oakland University

The Chaldean language initiative at Oakland University (OU) continues to build momentum as it expands both in-person and online learning opportunities. In recognition of International Mother Language Day, the College of Arts & Sciences / Linguistics program will host a presentation highlighting the history, structure, and cultural significance of languages, including the Chaldean language.

The event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Center and will also feature a cultural display; the Chaldean display will feature Chaldean books, flags, the Chaldean alphabet, and examples of ancient Mesopotamian writing—including Akkadian (Old Chaldean) materials such as mathematical tablets like Plimpton 322 and early Sumerian texts that demonstrate mathematical principles predating Euclid by nearly two millennia.

The presentation follows continued growth of the Chaldean Language Workshop hosted by Stephen Hannawi at OU, which recently introduced an Intermediate Chaldean level alongside its introductory course and expanded to include Zoom-based online classes. With strong student interest and increasing accessibility, the program reflects a broader effort to preserve, teach, and celebrate the Chaldean language while inviting the community to engage with its deep historical roots.
