World Cup Revisited
The last time Team Iraq qualified for the World Cup was in the 1980s, but that was not the last time Iraqi American fans rooted for a team. These photos are from the World Cup in 1994, when Detroit hosted at the Pontiac Silverdome. Our resident historian, Dr. Adhid Miri, was lucky enough to attend a match between Sweden and Brazil on June 28 with his sons and provided some photos to prove it. The 1994 FIFA World Cup in Detroit was a historic milestone, featuring four group-stage matches. It also hosted the first-ever indoor match in World Cup history, requiring an experimental portable grass pitch engineered by Michigan State University scientists.
