What’s Next For Grads?

We asked recent college graduates what their plans were after graduation, and if their plans were changed by the pandemic. We were surprised (but pleased) that most of the respondents were going into the medical field. We wish you all the best of luck in your careers!

I am so grateful, humbled, and blessed to have accomplished my dream of becoming a physician. Although the pandemic put a damper on my vacation plans before starting residency, I have spent quality time with my family. I am excited to be starting my internal medicine training at Henry Ford Hospital in July, and I plan to pursue a fellowship in hematology/oncology.

– Cortney Mckay, 26, Commerce Township

Although my medical school graduation wasn’t what I imagined it to be, I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate this accomplishment with my family and friends. Luckily, my plans for after graduation haven’t changed much besides postponing travel plans with family. I am so excited and thankful that I will be beginning my career as a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak this summer, and look forward to delivering lots of post-quarantine babies!

– Alison Thomas, 26, Orchard Lake Village

After graduating from nursing school this winter, I came to realize that now more than ever health care workers are needed in such a distressing and confusing time. My plan is to begin working in the hospital soon to be able to care for others in need. Yes, my plans have changed because I have to be more careful amid the coronavirus, but I am thankful for having my family and friends healthy and taking the necessary measures to continue to be healthy and safe.

– Lauren Narra, 23, West Bloomfield

My plans after graduating from Detroit Mercy Law School are to sit for the July 2020 Michigan Bar Exam. After that, I plan on working as an attorney for Kirk, Huth, Lange & Badalamenti in Clinton Township. The only thing for me that changed due to coronavirus was that the Michigan Bar Exam was modified into a 1 day essay-only exam administered online.

– Michael Petrus, 24, West Bloomfield

I am so grateful to have graduated as the first pharmacist in my family. I will be completing my post-doctoral residency training at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California. Not even coronavirus can stop my plans!

– Ashley Semma, 25, Troy

Blessed that I graduated with my doctor of pharmacy degree. Coronavirus hasn’t changed my plans. My plan is to work as a pharmacist while applying to medical school and become a physician as well someday.
